2009 c)i Competition

SUBMISSION DEADLINE : JANUARY 31, 2009 (NEW DATE)

Eligibility:

Composers of any nationality, age 35 or under. Finalists’ date of birth will be confirmed before the prizes are awarded.

Submitted works must be scored for 3 or more performers, drawn from counter)induction’s core instrumentation of clarinet, violin, viola, ‘cello, and piano. Works with flute or one other instrument will also be considered.

Works should be no more than 20 minutes in length and should not include electro-acoustic elements.

Works which have already been performed are eligible.

Works not selected for the prizes will be considered for performance in future seasons. Previous winners of the counter)induction prize are not eligible.

Selection:

Prizes will be awarded for one work from each of two categories:

  • Category I, composers age 18-22: $500 and a performance on the final concert of counter)induction’s 2008-2009 season, or in the 2009-2010 season.
  • Category II, composers age 23-35: $1,000 and a performance on the final concert of counter)induction’s 2008-2009 season.

Winners agree to provide scores/parts to c)i free of charge.

Finalists will be chosen by counter)induction members; the winners will be chosen by a prize committee of Lee Hyla (Northwestern University), Kathryn Alexander (Yale University), and Lewis Nielson (Oberlin Conservatory).

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR MUSIC TO THE CONTEST:

SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED VIA EMAIL ONLY.

Scores and recordings must be marked by a pseudonym and must not contain the composer’s true identity.

Scores will be accepted in PDF format only. The filename of your score should be formatted “pseudonym-piece title.pdf”. (For example, “diomedes-eonta.pdf”)

Recordings will be accepted in mp3 format only. The filename, likewise, should be formatted “pseudonym-piece title.mp3”. (For example, “diomedes-eonta.mp3”)

E-mail Instructions:

Include your real name, pseudonym and contact information in the body of the accompanying email. CLEARLY INDICATE WHETHER YOU ARE SUBMITTING FOR CATEGORY I (18-22) or CATEGORY II (23-35). Send your materials to ci.contest@gmail.com {click here} .

Application Fee:

Submit your application fee of $25 for the first score and $15 each additional score HERE by the January 15th deadline. Be sure to designate “counter)induction contest” as well as your pseudonym in the appropriate field. Only scores with an application fee paid by the deadline will be judged.
