Braid (2001)
for 'cello, viola, piano, violin

Braid was created by interweaving different musical material into an overlapping pattern. Sometimes the musical strands are quite coarse, such as at the beginning of the piece, sometimes much finer. These musical materials themselves were created through a complex process of intermixing. The piece is thus a braid of braids, an entwined, pulsating whole.

“It is thus possible to create a tradition that is held together by strict rules, and that is also successful, to some extent. But is it desirable to support such a tradition to the exclusion of everything else?...These are questions I intend to ask...And to these questions my answer will be a firm and resounding NO.
